Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a 9-inch cake pan with butter or cooking spray.
In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and honey until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs and vanilla extract and mix until well combined.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk and mixing until just combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and sprinkle with sugar and sliced almonds, if using.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes
This honey tea cake can be served plain, or with a dollop of whipped cream or honey butter. You can also add a teaspoon of cinnamon or cardamom to the dry ingredients for an extra hint of spice.
